Voice Cloning Consent: A Publishing Checklist for Creators

Check speaker permission, recording rights, project scope, and platform disclosure before publishing a cloned voice. Includes YouTube and ACX policy references.

Check the speaker's permission and the recording separately

Before cloning a voice, check who is speaking, who controls the recording, and what use is permitted. Permission to post an interview does not by itself establish permission to create a reusable synthetic voice. A speaker's consent also does not establish ownership of a recording produced by someone else.

VoiceCloner requires your own voice or explicit permission from the speaker. Keep a record of that permission and the source recording. Copyright, privacy, publicity, and contract rules vary by jurisdiction; this checklist helps organize a project, and does not determine its legal status.

What to agree with a speaker before recording

For a commissioned voice, discuss the following before uploading a sample:

  • Name the project and the person or organization allowed to use the clone. Include the intended platforms, languages, and commercial use.
  • Describe the kinds of text the clone may read and uses the speaker excludes. Agree how new projects will be approved.
  • Agree payment terms separately from permission to create and reuse the voice. Paying for a recording session does not settle every later use.
  • Set a permission period and a process for stopping future use. Discuss deletion of the profile and samples, and how existing published audio will be handled.

A useful project record contains the agreement, the original sample, a list of generated files, and where each file was published. Do not claim that deleting a voice profile also removes audio already distributed to other services.

Check the destination platform before producing the full narration

YouTube

YouTube's disclosure guidance focuses on meaningful, realistic altered or synthetic content. It lists cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs among examples that do not need disclosure. Content that makes a real person appear to say something they did not say can require disclosure.

Review the actual video, including its visuals and context, before deciding. Consent and disclosure are separate checks: a label does not give permission to use someone else's voice. Use the current AI disclosure setting when the platform's rules require it.

Audiobooks and other distributors

Do not assume a commercial voice license means a distributor accepts AI narration. ACX's audio submission requirements require human narration unless otherwise authorized. An authorized platform program does not automatically permit uploading a clone made by a different service.

For another distributor, check its current submission rules for your account and distribution method before producing a full book. Confirm narration eligibility, any required disclosure, and rights to the text as well as the voice. Keep the answer with your project records.

Uses VoiceCloner prohibits

Our Terms of Service prohibit unauthorized cloning, deceptive impersonation, harassment, fraud, and attempts to bypass voice authentication. Do not upload a celebrity clip or a recording found online simply because it is publicly accessible. If you cannot establish permission, use your own recording or choose a voice with terms that cover the project.

To prepare an authorized sample, follow the recording guide. For data handling or deletion requests, read the Privacy Policy or contact support. Platform references were checked on 1 October 2026; check them again before publishing.
